Tootsie Rolls are a brand of chewy candy that has been manufactored in the United States of America since 1896 The Tootsie Rolls were the first penny candy (candy sold for a penny) individually wrapped. The founder, Leo Hirshfield started a small candy buissness in New York. He wanted a chocolate candy that would not melt easily. He became succesful and named his candy after his daughter Clara "Tootsie" Hirshfield. By the year 1905 the company moved to a five story building and then in 1917, the company was named "The Sweets Company of America." Finally in 1922, the company was finally listed as a factory. In 1931, during the Great Depression the Tootsie Pop, a lollipop with a tootsie roll filling, was created. Its low price made it become very popular during this time period. Tootsie Rolls became a standard part of American soldiers' field rations due to the hardiness of the candy under a variety of environmental conditions. There is some different flavors like, strawberry, lime, vanilla, and more. Tootsie Rolls have been introuduced in various places such as Canada, Mexico, Aruba, United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Australia and New Zealend. Large Tootsie Rolls are made, and are similar to King Size chocolate bars, but aren't exactly King Size.
